Down 2nd Avenue by Nobel Prize nominee Eskia Mphahlele(South Africa)
Performed by Marcus Mabusela (South Africa)
Join us for Down 2nd Avenue, a powerful adaptation of the seminal 1959 memoir by Nobel Prize nominee Eskia Mphahlele. This play takes you on a poignant journey through Mphahlele’s early childhood in Marabastad, a poverty-stricken urban area outside Pretoria, South Africa. Raised by his strong-willed grandmother and later by his estranged parents, Mphahlele’s story highlights the harsh realities of apartheid, poverty, and high mortality rates among the black population.
As Mphahlele grows older and more educated, his awareness of the deep injustices of apartheid intensifies, fueling his anger and desire for change.
Don’t miss this compelling portrayal of resilience, resistance, and the fight for justice.
